The Migrant Business: More Than €143,000 Per Day, Managed By An Archipelago Of Cooperatives

Palermo.repubblica.it – The former Regional Aide for Families, managed of the Ippocrate in Enna: “We're only left with €3 per resident.”

In front of the gates to the former hotel 'Canguro', the locals of Castell'Umberto point their fingers above all at them: the cooperatives. “They make money and we take the migrants” is the phrase passing through the crowd.

When Public And Private Companies Take Care Of The Migrant Business

Antoniomazzeo.blogspot.it – The millions of Euros circulating in the migrant “welcoming” business in Italy are not only handed over to pseudo-cooperatives and fake non-profits, but even a construction company and a publicly limited company entirely in government ownership. This much can be gleaned from the “Report on the Working of the Reception System Established for Dealing with the Extraordinary Needs Connected to the Exceptional Arrival of Foreigner Citizens into National Territory (2015)”, presented on 13 March 2017 to the President of the Senate of the Republic by the Minister of the Interior.

Invisible People, Ripe for Exploiting.

After two months, we went back to Campobello di Mazara, to check on the conditions on the campsite at the former olive oil factory, and the migrants left there looking for work. We were contacted by two young African men who told us that they had been once again utterly abandoned by a blind politics, by a citizenry dead to cries for help, and by the passion for exploitation demonstrated by those with mandarin trees bearing fruit.

Migrants‘ assistance workers without being paid for months. Palazzotto (Sel): "But Sol. Calatino has received the funds".

No Salaries, in some cases for over a year, for workers who deal with migrants‘
assistance in the Catanese area. In one case, even so the cooperatives that manage the service have successfully received payments of local and national institutions. To report the case is the Parliamentary Sel Erasmus Palazzotto, with an interrogation of the Interior Minister Angelino Alfano. Two are the entities mentioned in the document: the Sprar* of Vizzini and the IPAB* of Catania.

We are stealing the hope – No welcoming in the area of Trapani.

La strada per arrivare al
Residence Marino.
"I find myself closed in this place, waiting for a document to get me a job that will give me the opportunity to send money home; I find myself thinking entire days about my family that I have disappointed and have not seen for more than a year; why do I have to wait all this time? Because in Italy, you are very slow to understand that we need freedom, work, and then, for eating and sleeping, we do take care by ourselves? You keep us all this time here, closed, like in a jail because you exploited us and earn a lot of money and us, we meanwhile die slowly, you are good, even at stealing our hope", David, Nigeria.

How the denial of rights develops into illegality and abuse of power

Last week four asylum seekers housed at the reception centre at Pian del Lago were reported by the Financial Guard, who caught them selling cigarettes distributed in the centre, at the nearby market place. This is not a new phenomenon in the city and a proper analysis of the dynamics which have led to this situation helps to better understand this incident and to see that there other people responsible for the situation.

Management of the Mineo CARA (hosting centre for asylum seekers) Mayor Marletta's proposal

While some mayors in the Caltagirone area are holding meetings ever higher up the political ranks in order to run the Mineo Cara (Hosting Centre for Asylum Seekers) independently, the mayor of Palagonia, Valerio Marletta strongly reiterates that he wishes to take a stand against this politics which deviates huge sums of public money into a structure that after the departure of the Americans would never have been able to find a better way to make money.

New migrant tragedies in front of the Lybian coast. The patrol boats given to Gaddafi have turned their motors off.

We've said it time and time again, but no one ever listens. The Immigration Emergency has to end (at least on paper) by the 31st December 2012. Reception facilities, which have cost a fortune from the very moment the State of Emergency was declared by Berlusconi in February 2011, will be closed and as for the boats that continue to arrive- we must speak about them as little as possible, the old bilateral agreements still stand.

"Who is speculating about what will happen to the refugees?" L'Espresso have carried out an inquiry into the managing of the North African Emergency

by Michele Sasso and Francesca Sironi
From L' Espresso
€1,000,300,000: this is the current sum which has been spent by the State on assisting those who have escaped Lybia and Tunisa. A free flow of money without any controls which many a hotel owner, conman and cooperatives of various natures have been able to turn into business opportunities.

What's happened to the funds for the North African emergency?

In Vittoria (Ragusa) the Dike structure, which has been housing unaccompanied minors since July 2011, is in the middle of the same dramatic situation as other centres which have been providing accommodation for refugees who arrived during the North African emergency. The necessary costs for each guest should be covered by the Local Council in Vittoria, who in turn receive Civil Protection funds from the government.
In the structure, there is a group of young asylum seekers, who arrived in Lampedusa by boat a year ago and were placed in temporary accommodation in Piana degli Albanesi for six months whilst waiting to be transferred to a centre for minors.

The next scandal of Civil Protection

da Linkiesta
di Antonello Mangano

Refugee emergency: €500 million flowed freely last year for the 20 million who arrived from Lybia via Lampedusa. The Civil Protection created a parallel system of first reception- without public tenders- for private organisations. There was a lack of checks and it was in Lazio that the first scandals emerged- cases of theft, rundown centres, migrants who were made to clear the snow, lengthy procedures, riots and violence. Those who work in the centres declare, "We are mothers, friends, guardians." The situation is precarious.
