Up until now, few, in fact none, had arrived, but yesterday Syrian migrants reached Sicilian shores. An article from blogsicilia:
Thirty five migrants arrived on the coast at Fontane Bianche, on the outskirts of Syracuse, this morning aboard a 20 metre vessel. The migrants were intercepted by Syracuse's Public Prosecutor's Interforze group soon after getting off the boat.
One small group managed to escape, but were found a few hours later by the Carabinieri. The migrants, who were Syrians, Indians and Egyptians, were taken to the military barracks in Cassibile for questioning and identification. The forces have seized the boat and an investigation is underway to understand if those in charge of the boat are among the migrants.
migrantsicily is a window on the situation of migrants in Sicily. The blog is part of project which monitors the situation and offers intervention in response to the every day and emergency migration politics of the Italian government concerning the flux of refugees from the Maghreb region and Libya.
