Borderline Sicily to the European Parliament “In Memory of Alexander Langer”

Last June 3^rd we were invited to the initiative in memory of Alexander Langer organized by the Green Party atthe European Parliament. With us were the friends of The Langer Foundation who awarded Borderline Sicily their prize in 2014. Our intervention was centred on the urgent measures, proposed by the European Commission to contrast the traffic of Human Beings, stressing the necessity of using suitable means.

Human trafficking is, first of all, a humanitarian matter, therefore it must be dealt with means that safeguard and protect human beings.

The asylum seekers in Pergusa have been waiting a year and a half for their asylum request to be examined

Last Friday we visited the CAS* in Enna within the district of Pergusa. The CAS is situated in the facilities of the former “Villaggio del Fanciullo” which was managed by the “Care centre for the elderly Santa Lucia of Enna”. About one hundred young asylum seekers of African origins live in the centre, mainly from Gambia and Mali, who are between 20 and 30 years old.

Almost all of them have been in this centre since last July 2^nd. Only twenty of them already had their hearing at the Commission, while the majority is still waiting after a year and a half to be convened by the local Commission. 

Off Sicily: Hundreds of boat people rescued

FAZ - Under tighter controls of the Italian Coast Guard, more than 700 refugees between Sicily and the coast of Tunisia have been taken up. The refugees were on their way to Italy with four cutters.
