Two dinghies with 226 refugees aboard, including 37 women and a child, were rescued yesterday evening in the Sicilian Channel by the coastguard. Two Italian boats went out to the two vessels after one of the migrants raised the alarm by satellite phone.
The first rescue took place 30 miles from the Lybian coast, whilst the second was 60 miles. Even though both boats were a sail, the migrants were transferred aboard the rescue ships and taken to Lampedusa. All of the refugees are reported to be in good health.
