handelsblatt - The
Coast Guard has again rescued refugees off Lampedusa. According to
the responsible naval staff, the boat drifted south of the
Mediterranean island with 61 people from Africa. An aircraft was also
in use during rescue. On 3 October, 336 people drowned off Lampedusa.
However, even after these incidents, refugees set out for Italy
nevertheless.
Italy is now
monitoring the affected sea area stronger. Hence, more ships and
aircrafts are in use – drones and helicopters with infrared vision
devices – between Malta, Sicily and the Libyan coast. After a
review of the Navy a week ago, about 2,000 people have been recovered
at various rescue operations ever since. There have been no deaths at
sea since then.
