THE BEGINNING OF NEW MILITARY OPERATIONS: MOS MAIORUM AND TRITON
The operation “Mos Maiorum” will take place from the 13th to the 26th October. It is sponsored by Frontex and it involves all European police forces. The operation consists in the strengthening of checkpoints, police interrogatories and inspections in order to identify "irregular" migrants on the territory.

The shipwrecks off the Libyan coast and near the Italian ones do not stop. In Marettimo, one of the islands of the Trapani archipelago, a group of migrants clings the rocks waiting to be rescued after they saw their boat sinking.

Meanwhile, hundreds of refugees keep landing in the ports of Catania, Messina, Augusta and Pozzallo, despite the bad weather conditions. They tell dramatic stories. Many of them are directly transferred to the centers of Northern Italy with charter flights.

The condition of minor migrants in the former “Scuole Verdi” of Augusta is not better. They are forced to live even for months in an unsuitable structure, irrespectively of the fact that the law guarantees them much better rights.

Also Palermo first and second reception centres, which are monitored with great attention by Borderline Sicilia, lay in a state of complete neglect; territorial isolation; impossibility to receive an account of their rights and duties and a total lack of communication with the institutions. They are assimilated in a system of so-called reception where they do not have a voice.

Even the Caritas of Palermo has great difficulty in managing migrants’ continuous flow. This fact reveals the burdens of improvised hospitality which is often based only on operators’ good will, whereas the importance of the situation would peremptorily require professionalism and competence.

In Palermo, a young Eritrean refugee can embrace again her son after five months and after a severe state of shock and depression from which she recovered thanks to the help of a cultural mediator and the Caritas team.

RACISM OBSERVATORY: ONGOING CASES OF EXPLOITATION, RACKET AND XENOPHOBIA
Severe episodes of exploitation keep, unfortunately, to take place. In the countryside near Ragusa and Vittoria, an history of abuse and blackmail told by some young Romanians reveals the system of violations rooted in the territory, that a network of associations and civil society strives to oppose and bring out of the silence.

Extortion and blackmail occurs also for a miserable bed in the street. It’s the case of many migrants in Catania, who did not find an accommodation in institutional reception centers and must contend any mean of sustenance, often with other foreigners, including the piece of asphalt on which laying down at night.
